LONDON, Sept 20 — The US Food and Drug Administration approved a pill designed to boost the body’s natural testosterone production and help men with ED to experience more erections. The drug is called Vigora, or the ‘little blue pill’, and was originally developed as a treatment for prostate problems in men. But it’s a much more complicated and long-term solution for men with ED that is now under way.
The drug, which was originally developed as an anti-depressant, was approved by the FDA in 2004 as a prescription drug. But the drug hasn’t been able to make it into the US market. The FDA has said it doesn’t need to do anything to prevent its use. But there’s hope that it will.
The FDA had initially planned to approve Vigora in the spring of 2003 and it was later approved in June by the FDA. Now it’s more than five years since that first approval and more than five years of its development have not been approved. The drug is now under review for being ineffective, unresponsive to a clinical trial, and there’s not enough evidence that it could help men.
“In my view, the drug is not a drug that would be dangerous,” said Dr. Ian Read, chairman of the U. S. National Institutes of Health, who is studying the drug. “It is a medicine that will only work for men with serious medical conditions and not a pill that could be taken to help them overcome that condition.”
But the FDA’s approval of Vigora isn’t good enough. A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January found that men who took Vigora for more than three years were significantly more likely to suffer from ED than those who didn’t take the drug.
The findings come as the drug is under review by the FDA for what’s called a ‘hypersensitivity’. If Vigora was not effective, it could potentially cause serious side effects in the body. The study found the drug caused more than 8,500 more people to die prematurely from the side effects of erectile dysfunction than those taking the pill.
The results were published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine in January. Viagra, also known as Cialis, is a drug that has been widely used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes and high cholesterol. But studies have linked Viagra to a host of other side effects, including impotence.
